Terracotta model of a horse

This terracotta model was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

Originally the model showed two draught horses side by side. One horse is almost complete, although chipped. Only parts of the four legs survive of the other.

The Romans depended greatly on horses. Materials needed to set up and provision the forts in Scotland were hauled over short and long distances by horses. The cavalry also of courses needed a large number of horses, and equipment for them.
