Scabbard chape
Add to album

A scabbard chape was placed at the end of the scabbard to protect the sword tip. This example is made of bronze and was found at Gogar Burn in Midlothian while digging a gravel pit. The chape dates from between 950 and 750 BC.

The chape tapers from the mouth to the bottom. It is damaged, with a small hole and crack.

Bronze swords were carried in scabbards, probably of wood and leather.
