Bridle bitA bridle bit is used to control a horse. This iron example was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 100 AD. The bridle bit is unusually well preserved. It is a type known as a snaffle bit. It fitted in a horse's mouth and reins were attached to the rings. The Romans used several types of horse bits.
