These five medals were awarded to Flight Sergeant George Thompson who was decorated posthumously for attempting to save his comrades when fire engulfed their Lancaster aircraft during a bombing mission over Germany in 1945. Despite his own injuries, from which he did not recover, Thompson hazarded his own life to drag two of his fellow crew-members from the flames. The medals are pictured with a silver model of an Avro Lancaster bomber, presented by the manufacturers to Thompson's family.
The medals include a Victoria Cross, a 1939-45 Star, a France and Germany Star 1944-5, a Defence Medal 1939-45 and a British War Medal 1939-45.
