Coin (obverse), Denarius serratus, of Aulus Postumius Auli filius Spurii nepos AlbinusThis silver coin was minted in Rome by Aulus Postumius Albinus, son of Aulus, grandson of Spurius, in 81 BC. It is a type known as a denarius serratus, due to its serrated edge. This picture shows the obverse of the coin. The obverse depicts Hispania, the personification of Spain, wearing a veil. The identification is made explicit by the inscription 'HISPAN' written downwards behind her. Most coins of the Roman Republic were issued by officials called moneyers. They were able to commission designs, which often referred to famous ancestors. This one doubtless refers to Lucius Postumius Albinus, praetor in Spain in 180 BC.
