Original drawing by Bruce Bairnsfather entitled 'Those Superstitions', 1915. Private Sandy MacNab (wearing a Glengarry bonnet) 'cheers' the assembly by pointing out that it is Friday the 13th and their number is one too many.

This cartoon is perhaps representative of the English view of Scots as 'Jeremiahs' (pessimists always fearing the worst possible outcome) during the war.

Bruce Bairnsfather (1888 - 1959) was a cartoonist, illustrator and journalist. Born at Murree in India, he served during World War I in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in France 1914 - 1916. In Britain he is best remembered as a cartoonist of the war.
