Harpoon (reconstruction)

This is a reconstruction of an antler harpoon head on a wooden shaft. Similar objects were used by early people especially when hunting swimming prey.

The sharp-pointed and barbed harpoon head was carved from antler with stone tools. It was detachable, held by a line made of sinew to the wooden shaft. The hole in the head was made using a bow drill. The shaft is of hazel.

Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains.
