Coin (Reverse), half thistle merk, from reign of James VIThis is the reverse of a silver half thistle merk minted at Edinburgh in 1601, during the reign of James VI. The coin was worth six shillings and four pence Scots. The reverse has a crowned thistle. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Jehovah protects the King' and is followed by the date, 1601. The coins of James VI's reign are considered to have the most beautiful designs and most varied legends of all Scottish coins.
