Coin (reverse), penny, from reign of Mary, Queen of Scots
This is the reverse of a billon penny minted at Edinburgh in 1556, during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. The coin was worth one penny Scots.
The reverse has a Latin legend 'Vicit Veritas' in two lines across the middle of the coin. The legend translates as 'Truth has conquered'. Above is a crown and below the date, 1556.
Mary's coinage is divisible into five phases, reflecting her early life, two marriages and two widowhoods. During her reign numerous issues appeared in gold, silver and base metal, many of them comprising denominations never previously struck.
