From Jarlshof, Shetland
This slate knife was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It dates from between 1000 and 600 BC. It could have been used for a variety of purposes, including skinning.
The small flat knife is made from a flaked piece of slate.
The inhabitants of Jarlshof made use of the abundant local supplies of stone to make crude-looking but effective tools.
