This is the reverse of a silver pattern half-merk minted at Edinburgh in 1636, during the reign of Charles I. The coin was worth six shillings and eight pence Scots.
The reverse has a crowned shield of arms with a crowned 'C' (for Carolus [Charles]) and a crowned 'R' (for Rex [King]) on either side. The Latin inscription translates as: 'I reign under the auspices of Christ'.
The pattern half-merk was an experimental design never used for circulating coinage.
