Cup
Add to album

This bronze cup was found at Lamberton Moor in Berwickshire in a hoard of Roman and native ornaments, pans and cups wrapped in a cloth. At least four cups were included, all products of native craftsmanship. The hoard was buried between 80 and 180 AD.

The cup was finished with a lathe, and ornamented in a style generally termed Boss Style, formed in repoussé technique. It was patched and cracked when deposited. Approximately half of the cup survives.

Hoards of metalwork were deposited in the first centuries AD for a number of reasons. Some are collections of valuables, some collections of scrap, and others, such as this one, significant objects deposited for religious reasons.
