Made in Edinburgh
This shows an end view of a silver box, made in 1899 by James Pears Hutton, a silversmith in Edinburgh.
The end panel, which has the maker's name inscribed in the bottom left hand corner, is decorated with a scene from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
James Pears Hutton was active as a silversmith from at least 1862 when he had his shop at 63 New Buildings on North Bridge in Edinburgh. He was influenced by the pre-Raphaelite movement and produced several works notable for their depiction of figures.
