Model coffin

This wooden model coffin with squared end pieces and a lid was found at Thebes in Egypt. It dates from the early 18th Dynasty (around 1539-1295 BC).

Model coffins were sometimes included among burial goods. They generally contain shabtis, models of servants buried with an ancient Egyptian in order to perform menial tasks in the Afterlife on behalf of the deceased.
