Medal (obverse), of Admiral Sir William Carnegie

This is the obverse of a large naval gold medal awarded to William, Earl of Northesk, in 1805 for his part in the Battle of Trafalgar.

This medal has an image of Britannia receiving a laurel from the winged figure of Victory depicted on it. The medal is fitted with a sewn together length of silk ribbon.

Carnegie was 3rd-in-command at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. His ship, HMS Britannia, was in almost constant action for 5 hours after breaking through the enemy line during the battle. As a result, 52 of the ship's crew were killed or wounded during action.
