This calculator was made in the 19th century, probably in France. It was used to solve mathematical problems connected with celestial mechanics, particularly those which involved the projected movements of a comet. In the late 19th century, it was used at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh. Made of brass, the calculator is unsigned.
