From Ashybank, Roxburghshire
This flat bronze axe- or adzehead was found at Ashybank in Roxburghshire. It is an early example of a metal axe- or adzehead made sometime between 2250 and 1850 BC. It could have been used to fell and work trees, or as a weapon, or both.
The axe- or adzehead was cast in a single-piece mould. If used for an axe, it would have been hafted at 90° to the haft, sticking out from near the top; if used for an adze, it would have been fixed to the bottom of an L-shaped haft, and swung downwards.
Metal tools were more efficient and more versatile than the stone versions they replaced.
