made in Edinburgh
This is a detail of a pewter bedpan made in the early 19th century by Robert Whyte, a prolific pewterer based in Edinburgh's Cowgate. Whyte became a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Edinburgh in 1805.
The detail shows the maker's mark on the base of the pan. It consists of the name 'ROBT. WHITE' above a shaped pouch containing 'R.W.', 'X' and a thistle.
