Hook made of deer antler

This hook made of deer antler was found at Bragar on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It was used sometime between 200 BC and 400 AD.

The hook was made from the beam and one tine of a deer's antler. Although the shape of the object resembles a pick, the object lacks the characteristic wear, and is perforated at the 'handle' end.

In early times, antler was first soaked, then worked with stone tools. Later, the work was made easier by using iron tools. Many antler objects, like this one, made the most of the natural shape and properties of the raw material.
