Coin (obverse), Denarius, of Lucius Rubrius DossenusThis silver coin was minted in Rome by Lucius Rubrius Dossenus in 87 BC. It is a type called a denarius, the most common Roman silver coin. This picture shows the obverse of the coin. The obverse depicts Jupiter, the father of the gods, with a sceptre over his shoulder. Below is the inscription 'DOSSEN' referring to the moneyer. Most coins of the Roman Republic were issued by officials called moneyers. They may have been elected, perhaps annually. In some cases, as here, the coins are the only evidence of them.
