This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Marcus Aemilius Scaurus and Publius Plautius Hypsaeus in 58 BC. It was a special issue authorised by the Senate, as indicated by the legend 'EX S.C' on the obverse. This picture shows the reverse of the coin.

The reverse depicts Jupiter, the father of the gods, hurling a thunderbolt while driving a vehicle called a quadriga. Below the horses is a scorpion. The legends above, 'P.HVPSAEVS' and 'AED CVR', record the name and position of one of the moneyers.

The legends below and to the right are an abbreviation for 'Caius Hypsaeus, consul; Preivernum captum'. This refers to an ancestor of Hypsaeus who captured Privernum, a city state in Italy, in the 4th century BC.
