This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.

The pattern, which was also made by other companies, is called 'ORIENTAL'. The plate's centre scene is set in the orient, with Eastern architecture in the background and eastern dress on the three figures in the foreground. The border pattern consists of eight panels with floral borders.

Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
