This oak chair was made in the 'quaint' or British art nouveau style with a particularly Scottish emphasis. We do not know who made the chair but it probably came from the west of Scotland.

An elongated back, pincer-like arms and trapezoidal seat are features of the 'caqueteuse' form, derived from 16th and 17th century chairs. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was only one of many furniture designers who adapted the form at this time.
