This pebble of striped quartz is thought to have been used as a charm in the 19th century, probably in Galloway. Quartz is often found in prehistoric burials and may have had a ritual significance. A number of painted examples come from broch sites.

The pebble was given to the Museum by Dr R. de Brus Trotter, a collector of folklore.
