Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates a day dress and an evening dress and is dated, 8 September, 1877. It is signed, 'P. VĂ©lard'. The fashion at this time was for solid, stiff textiles. Instead of soft flounces, there were knife pleats. Bows and sashes had a deliberately flattened appearance. Interest in the back of dresses persisted and trains emphasized this trend. The Queen was originally founded in 1861 by Samuel Beeton, the husband of the famous Mrs Beeton who wrote the world-renowned cookery book. At first, the magazine had little fashion content and its format was more like a newspaper. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
