Seal impression (cast)This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the 1st seal of the Abbot of Dryburgh Abbey in Roxburghshire, dating from 1324. The seal depicts an abbot holding an opened book and a crozier. The inscription 'SIGILLVN. ABBATIS. DE. DRIBVRGH' translates as 'Seal of the abbot of Dryburgh'. The gold border is modern cardboard trim. Dryburgh Abbey was founded in the 12th century. Although with fewer lands and endowments than Melrose, it was still a wealthy foundation.
