Seal impression (cast)
This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the Common Seal of Haddington Nunnery in East Lothian, dating from 1245. Common seals were used by institutions for their day to daybusiness.
The seal depicts the Virgin and Child sitting on a throne. The inscription 'SIGILLVM COE SANCTE MARIE DE HADINTVINE' identifies the nunnery. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.
Haddington Nunnery was founded in 1178 by Ada, Countess of Northumberland and mother of Malcolm IV and William the Lion. It was a Cistercian house, dedicated to the Virgin.
