This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880. The pattern, which was also made by other potteries, is called 'WILD ROSE'.

The centre shows a river running under a hump-backed bridge beside a thatched cottage. In the background is a church and a large house. The border pattern consists of wild rose heads against a dark background.

Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
