Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 1869, the plate illustrates a day dress and an evening dress. It is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'. The two women are standing in a box at the theatre. An ermine mantle is draped over one of the seats. The woman on the left has a pair of opera glasses to magnify the events on the stage. Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was the second daughter of Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
