This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from April, 1901, the plate illustrates six styles of hat.
The hats are elaborately trimmed with feathers, flowers and ribbons. The hair is waved and arranged at the back into coils or buns, with masses of curls covering the forehead.
La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was published every Sunday and had a circulation of approximately 20,000.
