Panel, entitled Yellow Striped Cross, by Norma Starszakowna

This batik-dyed silk panel was made by the Scottish artist Norma Starszakowna in 1979. It is entitled 'Yellow Striped Cross'. The design is based on people in a state of transition, and the treatment influenced by old remnants of cloth. The panel formed part of the Scottish Crafts Collection, which was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland when the Scottish Craft Council was wound up.

The panel has a black background with figurative elements on a secondary yellow background in the form of a folded cloth. A cross of yellow stripes was applied to a base layer of muted yellow diagonal stripes. The edges of the surface silk are frayed.

Norma Starszakowna was born in Fife in 1945. She designs and produces textiles for use in public interiors and fashion. She has exhibited throughout the UK and abroad. She has taught at the School of Design University of Dundee, as well as holding visiting lectureships throughout the UK.
