Add to album

This brass telescope dates from around 1835. It was sold by John Ramage, a scientific instrument maker based in Aberdeen.

The refracting telescope is mounted on a stand. It has a terrestrial and celestial eyepiece, and a panchromatic extension on the celestial lens. On the body of the tube end it is signed 'I. RAMAGE/ Aberdeen'.

John Ramage (1783-1835) was one of the few Scottish instrument makers who had a good reputation in England. His Aberdeen business was taken over after his death in 1835 by his second son, also named John. It is unclear which Ramage sold this instrument.
