A lugger was a sailing vessel rigged with a lugsail - a four-sided sail slung from an off-centre position on its yard. This wooden model represents the English lugger 'Industry', a typical Hastings fishing boat from 1870. The model was built to a scale of 1:16 by Mr L Foster of Colchester in Essex.

These broad, flat-bottomed boats could be hauled up the steep shingle beaches by capstans powered by men or horses. They had deep bilge runners to hold them upright and to act as skids during movement ashore.

Luggers carried a crew of six men and boys and accommodation was provided in the 'fore-room'. The largest luggers had a displacement of between 7 and 16 tons.
