Even as late as 1969, when cheap travel overseas was increasingly available, one of the inducements of Army life was free travel to exotic destinations, at that time still expensive to travel to in comfort. The climate of Singapore, so very different from that of Scotland, is indicated by 'Willie' being dressed in tropical uniform.
