Model, of Mayflower
Add to album

This wooden model represents the 'Mayflower', the ship in which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth to New England in 1620. Little is known about the construction details of the 'Mayflower' so this model is based on what is known about trading ships of that time. It was built to a scale of 1:48 by Mr R Paterson of Lasswade in Midlothian.

The 'Mayflower' was a small three-masted vessel. The Union flag can be seen on the top of the highest mast - this was required on all English ships after 1606.

In September 1620, one hundred men, women and children set off in the 'Mayflower' to establish a new colony in America. The ship returned to England the following year. By 1624 the records indicate that the ship was 'in ruins'.
