Marble bust of Dr Thomas Chalmers

This marble bust of academic and popular minister Dr Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) was made in 1846 by Sir John R Steell, member of the Royal Scottish Academy.

In the Disruption of 1843, Thomas Chalmers led a third of the ministers out of the established church to form the Free Church of Scotland. He became the new church's first Moderator.
