Seal impression (cast)
Add to album

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the seal of the burgh of Whithorn in Wigtownshire, dating from the 15th century.

The seal depicts St Ninian, the 5th century missionary. The inscription 'S. comuni civitatis. burgi. candide case' identifies the burgh. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

St Ninian is reputed to have founded the early church at Whithorn, the 'Candida Casa' ('White House). It remained an important religious centre, with many pilgrims coming to the shrine of St Ninian. Whithorn was created a royal burgh by Robert the Bruce.
