Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates two day dresses (one for outdoors) for women and one for a young girl. It is dated 6 September, 1879. There was a great interest in the elaborate trains at the backs of dresses at this time and many fashion plates gave back views and profiles. The style of the bodice was known as a 'cuirasse' bodice. By 1874 the 'cuirasse' bodice had become an important element in fashion. It was a corset-shaped bodice with a design somewhat similar to that of a man's jacket.
