Tobacco box (detail), associated with Boer War
Add to album

This detail shows the lid of a tobacco box containing four bars of tobacco which was one of a number sent out to troops serving in the Boer War in South Africa in November 1900 as a morale-boosting gesture from the Scottish Regiments' Gift Fund.

The text above and below the thistle motif reads, 'Frae Scots tae Scots' and 'For Auld Lang Syne'.

During the Boer War (1899-1902), the loss of men was so great that a school was founded in Dunblane in Perthshire for the orphaned sons of Scottish soldiers.
