From Newstead, Roxburghshire
This block of roughly square sandstone, with a boar carved in relief, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 140 and 180 AD.

Roman legions often had animal emblems. The boar was the emblem of the 20th Roman legion. Many of the soldiers who belonged to the legion were stationed at Newstead at one stage.
