From Coupar Angus Relief Church, Perthshire
Add to albumThese brass moulds for casting communion tokens are from Coupar Angus Relief Church in Perthshire. They date from around 1791.
Each mould is attached to a wooden handle. One face is inscribed 'Coupar Angus', the other 'Relief c.1791', to cut the two separate faces of the token.
In the 18th century many congregations broke away from the established church on points of principle, mainly concerning choice and appointment of ministers. One of the earliest succession groupings was the Relief Church, founded in 1761.
