Lamp holderThis lead lamp holder was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It held a lamp filled with oil on which a wick floated. Lamp holder of lead, from the Roman site at Newstead, 80 - 180 AD The Romans used oil lamps, candles and lanterns to provide lighting inside. Most surviving oil lamps are pottery, although metal examples are also known. The lamps were sometimes carried on metal lampholders such as this one.
