Lamp holderThis lead lamp holder was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The flat shelf of the lamp holder held a small lamp filled with oil. The Romans used oil lamps, candles and lanterns to provide lighting inside. Most surviving oil lamps are pottery, although metal examples are also known. The lamps were sometime carried on metal lampholders such as this one.
