Dirk and portrait, associated with Captain David Aytone
Add to album

This silver-mounted dirk was carried by Captain David Aytone of the 74th (Highland) Regiment when on service in India. It is pictured in its scabbard. The framed miniature portrait shows Captain Aytone in plain clothes.

The dirk was worn hung from the horn tongue that slipped into the waistband of the belted plaid, the kilt or the breeches which were worn in India.

Aytone was killed at the battle of Assaye in 1803 where the regiment's casualties exceeded 400 and every officer was either killed or wounded.
