This Royal Standard of Scotland was found in Crete in 1941. It was flown by a New Zealand infantry unit visit during the invasion of Crete the same year. To show its Scottish descent, this infantry company from Otago, New Zealand adopted the ancient royal standard of Scotland as its company flag.

The bunting standard has a yellow background with a red lion in the centre. The lion is surrounded by a red border with fleur-de-lys decoration.

The flag was picked up by a Greek soldier after the action at Galatas, where the 23rd Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was involved in heavy fighting. It was kept by Greek partisans in Crete. In 1945 it was handed over to the British military authorities when Crete was liberated.
