Add to album

Picnic set made of lacquered wood with two engraved metal sake bottles. The set is decorated with episodes from the 24 Confucious stories of filial piety in hiramakie and takamakie. Japanese still take picnics under the cherry blossom in the Spring.

This picnic set has a carrying case with silver latticework at the sides. It contains a tier of four food boxes above which is placed a tray and two sake cups. Two boxes each containing four trays are found above and below the two metal sake bottles.

The picnic set was bought with eleven other Japanese objects at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876 by Thomas Archer, director of this museum from 1860-1885 who helped set up the above.
