This is the back of an electrotype replica of a silver gilt brooch known as the 'Lochbuy Brooch'. Made in the West Highlands around 1500, the original is in the British Museum. It belonged to the MacLaines of Lochbuy in Mull.

The text around the outer edge of the rim reads, 'The silver oar of this broch was found on the estate of Lochbuy in Mull & made by a tinker on that estate about the year 1500. It was handed down by the ladies of that family'.

Artists, aos-dana (the folk of gifts), and professional people formed an aristocracy of learning, their skills passed down through generations of the same family.
