Model, of picket boat carried by HMS Hood
Add to album

This wooden model represents a steam picket boat carried by the battle HMS 'Hood' around 1920. The original was used to convey men and stores between ship and shore. The model was built to a scale of 1:24 by Martin J H Cowie.

The model shows the steam picket boat at the peak of its development, before the internal combustion engine replaced the steam engine in ships' boats.

At the turn of the century, picket boats were fitted to carry 14 inch torpedoes, but they were found to be ineffective against the battleships of the First World War. After that time they carried only small armaments.
