A rowel spur is a spur with a small spiked wheel attached. This example is made of iron and was found at Threave Castle in Kirkcudbrightshire. It dates from the 15th century.

Threave Castle was built in the late 14th century on a small island in the River Dee. It was a stronghold of the Black Douglases, one of Scotland's most powerful medieval families.
