RecordSet of half size Highland bagpipes or 'Reel' pipesby Peter Henderson, Glasgow, early 20th century
Set of half size Highland bagpipes or 'Reel' pipesSet of Highland bagpipes, half-size, of African blackwood, ivory mounted, by Peter Henderson of Glasgow, early 20th century. The sheepskin bag of the bagpipe, conventionally covered in a decorative fabric such as tartan, is here left uncovered to show the form of the bag and the method of tying in the stocks. Half-size or 'Reel' pipes were made to the same pitch but the overall proportions were reduced giving a smaller set of pipes. Different sizes of Highland bagpipe were more commonly offered by makers in the past. Peter Henderson (1851 - 1903) was a successful bagpipe maker, a pipe music collector and publisher. He founded his business in Glasgow in 1868, taking over the premises which belonged to Donald Macphee. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
